Reactions have continued to pour in over Nigeria’s 0-0 draw with Cape
Verde,in preparations for the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa.
Nigeria
drew their second successive game in 2013,in a game they struggled to
find their rhythm, but were constantly cautioned for indiscipline from
the players.
An ex-international,Waidi Akanni,stated that the
game against Cape Verde, exposed the Super Eagles frailties and showed
that they are not yet a team.
“Technically speaking, I believe we have a squad but not a team yet,” Akanni told Vanguard Sports.
Akanni
was of the opinion that the Super Eagles would miss the services of
some the big players excluded from the final 23 man-list to the Nations
Cup.
“The performance of the team against Cape Verde only
justified the belief by some of us that Nigeria was not going to be
represented by her best players,” he noted.
“Personally, I was
not comfortable with the exclusion of players like Osaze, Martins,
Obinna Nsofor among others when he announced the preliminary list.”
“He
should have given them the chance to prove their worth. Even Niyi
Adeleye whom everybody is saying would take over from Yobo was ignored”
Akanni added.
When asked if he sees Nigeria winning the trophy
in South Africa,Akanni was blunt and said that the Super Eagles will
not win the tournament.
“I don’t see them winning the trophy. May be, in a future edition, definitely, not this,” he said. hannytalker
